Hillary Clinton- A message to LGBT Americans: I want to be your President
Posted by: Scott at 6:21 pm in Elections
Hillary Clinton wrote a guest blog piece over at The Bilerico Project. In it she reaches out to our community, outlines her plans if elected, and asks for your vote.
Here’s a segment:
"We have so much work to do. When I am President, we will work together to make sure that all Americans in committed relationships have equal benefits and that nothing stands in the way of loving couples who want to adopt children in need. We’re going to expand our federal hate crimes legislation and pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and assure that they are both fully inclusive of all people. And finally, we will put an end to the failed policy of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Courage, honor, patriotism and sacrifice – the traits that define our men and women in uniform – have nothing to do with sexual orientation."
You can read her entire post here.
You can also see Hillary Clinton in a live Townhall meeting tonight. It starts tonight at 9 p.m. EST. You can tune in on Hallmark Channel or watch it streamed live over her website at HillaryClinton.com.

Sorry, Hillary. . .
. . .at this point in time, I have not made up my mind yet on who to vote.
. . .but I must tell the truth and shame the devil, I’m still smarting from your husband’s promise to integrate gays into the military, and then running in retreat with his tail tucked between his legs over Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
Don’t make any promises you don’t intend to keep, darlin’.

Tom-
Hillary is not her husband.
I also think that Bill Clinton had no choice. Should he have not worked up the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” compromise, the Republicans and conservatives would have tried to put an amendment or other legislation through to completely ban us. Yes, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was a failure, but you have to remember that America was in quite a different mindset in 1993. It took years of work by the leaders and activists of our community, but I think that most of the American public is now realizing “gay” isn’t something to fear.
i would like to see her win.

I understand, Scott.
But I still stand by my statement.
Don’t make any promises you don’t intend to keep.
And if the Republican’ts can use gay marriage to whip up frenzy with many of its constituants to vote for them, America is STILL not fully ready for a little thing like gays in the military.
(and BTW, that IS a worse mind-set than 1993.)
*sigh!*

“Don’t ask, don’t tell” was a HUGE pill for the general American public to swallow. From her blog piece on the Bilerico Project, she talks about how her conservative father changed his views, but realizes that the change was gradual and not overnight. She speaks of ‘working together’ to end discrimination of LGBT Americans and doesn’t promise us the world, which she is intelligent enough to ain’t gonna happen. Yesterday here in DC, the “breaking news” on Channel 7 at 5pm was a mass email sent to members of a large African-American church outing several members. The reaction to this woman’s allegations show us that we have a LONG way to go, but Hillary seems to understand this. How could she not if she has gay and lesbians with her on the campaign trail?
Given how strongly associated former President Clinton was with DADT, it’s a big step for Senator Clinton to promise to end it. I see no reason to believe that she won’t keep the promise. Certainly as commander-in-chief, she’d have the power to do so.

That was quite powerful. I just hope that if elected she holds herself to her statements. No, it’s not her… I’m just skeptical of all politicians.

Part of her being able to accomplish what she envisions is subject to Congress. We can help her (or Obama should that be the case) be more effective in getting these things done by giving her a Democrat-majority in Congress to work with.
I’m beyond thrilled that her LGBT positions seem to be strengthening as she goes. I think she played it so safely (all that talk of hugging the polls) in the beginning and is FINALLY realizing it’s ok to “come out” and embrace some real, honest-to-goodness progressive and liberal ideas and stances.
Also, she might have trouble saying some words (like transgender) but she has yet to campaign with someone the likes of Donnie McClurkin and that goes a lot farther with me.

Just to let you know, Scott, I cast my vote for Hillary tonight.
I just hope I don’t live to regret it.
Cheers, buddy!
Tom
I will note that Sen. Clinton has stated on the record that had she been in Congress at the time, she would have voted in favor of DOMA (which her husband signed into law). Note that the quote above carefully parses giving GLBT people “equal benefits” but does not promise marriage equality.
Just a thought for those of you who care about the marriage issue too.

Only one candidate, Dennis Kucinich, came out in favor of LGBT marriage. Look where it got him. Ron Paul supporters may try to convince you that their candidate is for gay marriage, but he’s not. He opposes the federal government making a decision either way about it. He thinks it should be left completely up to the states. If civil rights for African-Americans had been left up to the states, where do you think states like Alabama and Louisiana would be today?
Clinton and Obama both support civil unions. I honestly believe that a candidate that said he or she was for LGBT marriage would not get elected at this time. Is that right? Hell no, but look at what we’re up against with the Religious Right and conservative America.
We need to pick our battles. Our first priority should be to get a LGBT-friendly candidate into office. In this case I believe Clinton is more supportive of us than Obama. As a politician she has consistently supported and voted for us as well as reached out to our community. Obama has only paid us lip-service while he didn’t respond to interview requests from outlets like Logo. He also ignored our concerns that he had an “ex-gay” preacher on his campaign tour.
Once we get a President that is LGBT-friendly elected, then maybe we can reapproach the subject of marriage. Keep in mind that the President would also need a Congress that would agree with them and help him or her enact gay marriage. The President can only sign the bill. Congress has to pass it first.
P.S. for Dennis-
You make that claim about Clinton. I’m not saying it’s not true, but can you please provide a reference for it?
