I received the following e-mail from Dan Renzi today:

Dan Renzi and friendHello.

I’m raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

It’s a pretty big deal.

I’m supporting this organization because the "gay community" has proven itself to be extremely effective at raising funds for its own causes, like political organizations and AIDS research and care–but we don’t have to support our own causes all the time. As I’m a part of that "community," I think we should contribute to the world around us.

But it doesn’t matter what your reason is. Please, go to this page:

Dan Renzi

On that page you can make a donation. In Miami, $20 will buy you about 2 drinks. And everyone I know has more than that. If we can afford overpriced liquor, we can afford giving to the leukemia & lymphoma society. And I promise, as much fun as those drinks are, this will feel better.

If you’ve never given money to a charity before, now is your chance. This is a recording. Please wait for the beep. Thank you.

Dan

While we’re on the subject of worthy causes, Mark is walking in the 2007 AIDS Arms Life Walk. If you have the means, please support him as well.

Thanks in advance for your generosity.

I wholeheartedly agree with the spirit of Dan’s email. . .

. . .however, it is always good to know who handles these said charities.

I never want to unwittingly (again) give my hard-earned money to a charity that is organized by enemies of our own community.

Been there, done that, bought the soundtrack!

  2. But the Leukemia Society isn’t one of those anti-gay organizations. They do amazing things with their money, they fund research and find cures for diseases. There’s nothing political here, it’s just a worthy cause.

And I, too, agree that gay people need to start taking part in the world around them. We are a strong fundraising force, we can make a big impact by lending our efforts to non-gay causes. And think of the benefit of people seeing the “gay community” helping out.
